Chapter 15 - THE POOL

Two years later, the mansion pool had been renovated.

Sophia almost removed it.

Then didn’t.

She refused to let one night own the space.

She and Ryan were divorced.

He had moved to another state and worked under financial restrictions tied to settlement obligations.

No contact with Emily.

Limited necessary contact with Sophia through attorneys until all obligations were complete.

Emily lived twenty minutes away.

She and Sophia were sisters again.

Not the same sisters.

Better in some ways.

More careful.

They did not pretend betrayal vanished because a bigger betrayal existed.

One summer evening, Emily came over.

White dress again.

Different one.

Sophia noticed.

“You’re brave.”

Emily looked down.

“Oh.”

Then laughed.

“I didn’t even think about it.”

Progress.

They sat beside the pool.

No Ryan.

No lawyers.

Emily said:

“Do you ever think about pushing me in?”

Sophia stared.

Then laughed.

“Sometimes.”

Emily laughed too.

Then Sophia became serious.

“I could’ve really hurt you.”

“Yes.”

“I was out of control.”

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry.”

Emily nodded.

Unlike before, Sophia’s betrayal had been physical.

It mattered too.

Then Emily said:

“I used to tell myself Ryan tricked me.”

Sophia waited.

“He did.”

Pause.

“And I still chose.”

Sophia looked at her.

That was the sentence she had needed.

Not:

I was manipulated, therefore innocent.

Not:

I’m terrible forever.

Both responsibility and context.

Sophia said:

“I know.”

Then Emily asked:

“Why do you think he picked me?”

Sophia thought.

“Because he knew you wanted to be chosen.”

Emily flinched.

True.

Then:

“And he knew I wanted to be right.”

Sophia had needed to believe her marriage was stable because admitting uncertainty felt like failure.

Ryan exploited both.

Emily asked:

“Do you think he ever loved either of us?”

Sophia looked at the water.

“Yes.”

Emily seemed surprised.

Sophia continued:

“I think he loved people the way he loved money.”

“How?”

“As something he felt safer controlling.”

That was not the same as no love.

Maybe worse.

Then Sophia stood.

Walked to the edge.

Emily looked nervous.

“What are you doing?”

Sophia stepped into the shallow end.

Fully clothed.

Black summer dress.

Emily burst out laughing.

“Sophia!”

Sophia looked up.

“Come in.”

“No.”

“Coward.”

Emily kicked off her shoes.

Then jumped.

Water splashed everywhere.

They laughed like teenagers.

For one moment the pool became only a pool.

Then Emily surfaced.

Hair wet.

Sophia looked at her.

Two years earlier she had grabbed that hair in rage.

Now she held out a hand.

Emily took it.

Not because everything was forgotten.

Because trust returned in pieces.

Truth first.

Accountability second.

Time after that.

The mansion lights came on.

Sophia smiled.

“No more husbands.”

Emily laughed.

“That seems extreme.”

“Fine. No more husbands named Ryan.”

“Deal.”

They sat on the steps.

Water around them.

No audience.

No humiliation.

No choice demanded between sisters.

Ryan had once survived by keeping them apart.

The final thing he lost was not the money.

May you like

It was that.

THE END
