Chapter 11 - MIA'S STATEMENT
Mia became the witness Jason hated most.
Not because she exaggerated.
Because she did not.
She said:
“I saw Mr. Carter throw clothing onto his mother’s lap.”
“I heard him order her to wash it.”
“I observed Ms. Carter refuse.”
“I observed him become angry.”
Then the plate incident.
Mia had not witnessed it.
She said so.
Good.
She only documented:
injury,
Helen’s report,
Jason’s later behavior.
Jason’s lawyer asked:
“Did Ms. Carter ever manipulate Mr. Carter into doing tasks?”
Mia paused.
“Yes.”
Jason smiled.
Then Mia continued:
“She intentionally presented herself as more dependent than she was.”
Rachel closed her eyes.
Dangerous truth.
Then:
“Did that concern you?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because deception can escalate conflict.”
Jason looked triumphant.
Then:
“Did you believe she lacked capacity?”
“No.”
“Did you believe she was unsafe with her son?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because his behavior changed depending on whether a witness was present.”
Silence.
Then Mia added:
May you like
“That pattern concerned me more than anger alone.”
Jason stopped smiling.
