Chapter 12 - HELEN'S OWN RESPONSIBILITY
Therapy was harder than court.
Helen wanted a clean story.
Jason hurt her.
Jason exploited her.
Jason lied.
All true.
Then therapist Dr. Naomi Grant asked:
“What did you teach him before he became thirty?”
Helen stiffened.
“Excuse me?”
“You paid his debts.”
“Yes.”
“You called employers when he was fired.”
Helen looked away.
“You cleaned up legal problems.”
“Minor ones.”
“You let him move back repeatedly without conditions.”
Helen’s eyes filled.
“So this is my fault?”
“No.”
Important.
Then:
“But if you want to understand the family system, your choices matter too.”
Helen hated that.
Then saw it.
Every time Jason suffered consequence, Helen softened it.
Fine?
Paid.
Rent late?
Covered.
Job lost?
Food.
Girlfriend left?
Money.
He learned:
crisis produces rescue.
Then eventually:
rage produces service.
Helen whispered:
“I thought loving him meant not letting him fall.”
Dr. Grant answered:
“Maybe he never learned how far the ground was.”
That did not excuse assault.
It explained why boundaries felt like betrayal to him.
