Chapter 14 - THE HOUSE AFTER JASON

Silence returned.

At first, Helen hated it.

No slammed doors.

No demands.

No laundry on the floor.

Then she realized:

No fear.

Mia’s visits decreased as Helen recovered.

Wheelchair gone.

Brace removed.

Walking steady.

The service bell remained.

Helen almost threw it away.

Then kept it on a shelf.

Not as a weapon.

Reminder.

Rachel asked:

“What happens to the house now?”

Helen had options.

Keep it.

Sell.

Downsize.

For years she assumed Jason would inherit it.

Now she did not know.

That felt freeing.

She amended the trust again.

Not to cut Jason out completely.

He would receive a modest protected share if he maintained financial independence and no further abuse occurred.

The rest would fund:

community elder-abuse legal services,

home-care assistance,

and scholarships for caregivers.

Rachel smiled.

“Still taking care of people.”

Helen answered:

“Yes.”

May you like

Then:

“Differently.”
