Chapter 7 - THE HOUSE DOCUMENTS
The first document:
REVOCATION OF POWER OF ATTORNEY.
Effective immediately.
The second:
NOTICE TO FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS — NO AUTHORITY GRANTED TO JASON CARTER.
Third:
FRAUD ALERT AND CREDIT FREEZE.
Fourth:
NOTICE OF DISPUTED HOME-EQUITY APPLICATION.
Fifth:
AMENDED REVOCABLE TRUST.
Jason flipped faster.
“What is this?”
Helen watched.
The house had belonged solely to Helen after Thomas’s death.
Jason had no ownership interest.
The amended trust did three things.
One:
removed Jason as successor trustee.
Two:
appointed an independent fiduciary.
Three:
required any future distribution to Jason to be made through a protected discretionary trust rather than direct control.
Jason stared.
“You can’t do that.”
Rachel Sloan stepped into the room.
“Yes, she can.”
Jason spun.
“You set this up?”
Rachel answered:
“Helen did.”
Then another page.
NOTICE TO VACATE.
Thirty days.
Jason laughed.
“You can’t evict your own son.”
Helen said:
“I checked.”
Rachel added:
“He is an adult tenant-at-will in this jurisdiction. We are following formal process.”
Jason’s hands shook.
Then he saw the final page.
Police report number.
Elder abuse referral.
Financial exploitation complaint.
Jason looked at Mia.
Mia did not look away.
Helen said:
“You wanted paperwork.”
