Chapter 6 - THE SERVICE BELL

Helen turned Jason’s arrogance into routine.

If he threw laundry on her lap:

“No. Washer.”

If he demanded food:

“You cook.”

If he left dishes:

“Kitchen.”

At first he refused.

Then Helen said:

“Mia says I need rest.”

Jason cared about the nurse’s notes now.

He wanted Helen documented as dependent.

So he complied.

He cooked badly.

Carried laundry.

Cleaned enough to look supportive.

Then complained constantly.

“This is bullshit.”

Helen smiled.

“Keep going.”

He hated that smile.

One afternoon he snapped:

“You think you’re queen now?”

Helen answered:

“No.”

Then:

“I think you live here for free.”

Jason stared.

He wanted to shout.

Mia was in the room.

He swallowed it.

Good.

Control changes behavior when witnesses exist.

Then he noticed the service bell.

Helen used it whenever she needed something.

Ding.

Water.

Ding.

Medication.

Ding.

Laundry basket.

Jason began hearing it in his sleep.

He hated the sound because it reversed the household.

For years, Helen jumped when he yelled.

Now he moved when she rang.

Then one evening the bell sounded.

Jason stormed in.

“What?”

Helen sat upright in the wheelchair.

A thick folder rested on the table.

House documents.

Trust documents.

Legal notices.

Jason grabbed it.

Opened the first page.

His face drained of color.

“WHAT DID YOU DO?!”

Helen smiled.

That was the moment he finally understood.

May you like

She had not been waiting to recover.

She had been preparing.
