Months later Caroline asked Evelyn to meet.
No Richard.
No Derek.
Public restaurant.
Evelyn agreed.
Caroline looked tired.
Less polished.
Still angry.
She asked:
“Did you ever love me?”
Evelyn was surprised.
“Yes.”
Caroline laughed bitterly.
“You evicted me.”
“Yes.”
“You froze distributions.”
“Temporarily.”
“You helped expose Derek.”
“I disclosed documents.”
Caroline stared.
“Why?”
Evelyn understood.
Not:
why consequences.
Why love and boundaries together?
She said:
“Because loving you did not make your actions harmless.”
Caroline looked away.
Then:
“Dad always said you didn’t understand family.”
Evelyn smiled sadly.
“Your father used family to avoid saying no.”
True.
Then Caroline asked:
“Were you waiting for me to fail?”
“No.”
“Then why keep files?”
“Because money makes people rewrite history.”
Caroline flinched.
She had.
Then:
“Do I get anything from the trust?”
Evelyn almost laughed.
Still money.
Then answered:
“If you meet the conditions eventually.”
“What conditions?”
“Independent financial counseling. No fraudulent borrowing. No unauthorized pledging. Full disclosure.”
Caroline stared.
“You control whether I inherit?”
“Partly.”
“That’s insane.”
“Maybe.”
