Chapter 14 - RICHARD CHOOSES A SIDE DIFFERENTLY

Richard spent most of the year angry at everyone.

At Caroline for fraud.

At Derek for weakness.

At Evelyn for acting without him.

Then Evelyn said:

“That last one is the problem.”

Richard stared.

She continued:

“You’re angry because I used authority you forgot I had.”

He wanted to argue.

Couldn’t.

Their marriage entered counseling.

For the first time, Richard admitted:

“I liked being the person everyone came to.”

Same as Evelyn.

Different currency.

She served with labor.

He served with money.

Both needed to feel indispensable.

Caroline learned dependence from both.

Then Richard did something important.

He revised his personal estate plan.

Not to punish Caroline.

To stop vague promises.

Specific.

Documented.

No “someday the house is yours.”

He wrote a letter to Caroline.

Not legal.

Personal.

I confused giving you everything with preparing you for anything.

Caroline read it.

Cried.

Then called him.

Not Evelyn.

That was fine.

Repair did not need a triangle anymore.
