Richard wanted to blame Derek.
Easy.
Then Michael showed him emails.
Caroline asked Richard for $400,000 six months earlier.
Reason:
business expansion.
Richard transferred it.
No documentation.
Then $250,000.
Then paid her AmEx.
Then covered a tax bill.
Evelyn stared.
“You never told me.”
Richard said:
“She’s my daughter.”
Same sentence.
Different family.
Evelyn laughed once.
Not funny.
Then:
“You complained when I bought a $14,000 sculpture.”
“That’s different.”
“How?”
Richard had no answer.
Caroline had learned money had no bottom.
Every crisis:
Dad.
Every overspend:
Dad.
Every failed plan:
Dad.
Evelyn had enabled with labor.
Richard had enabled with cash.
Both were forms of rescue.
Then Michael showed:
Richard had privately promised Caroline “the house someday.”
Not legally enforceable against trust.
But emotionally explosive.
Caroline cried.
“You told me it was mine.”
Richard looked ashamed.
“I said I hoped—”
“No. You said mine.”
That mattered.
Caroline’s entitlement had roots.
