Chapter 5 - CAROLINE'S COUNTERATTACK
Caroline hired attorney Lauren Pierce.
Excellent.
Lauren did not panic.
She attacked the trust.
Argument:
Evelyn exercised undue influence over Richard during financial crisis.
The trust transfer disproportionately benefited new spouse over biological daughter.
Richard was emotionally vulnerable.
Evelyn had leverage because she supplied rescue capital.
Caroline framed it as:
rich second wife captures family home.
Powerful narrative.
Then Lauren attacked Richard.
“You were desperate?”
“Yes.”
“You feared bankruptcy?”
“Yes.”
“Evelyn conditioned rescue on trust transfer?”
Richard paused.
Then:
“Michael proposed it.”
“Did Evelyn benefit?”
“Yes.”
“Did Caroline receive independent counsel?”
Caroline was eighteen at the time.
Not a party to transfer.
Still emotionally effective.
Then Lauren found a letter from Richard to Evelyn:
I don’t know what I’d do without you.
Caroline used it to imply dependence.
Michael replied:
“Emotional dependence is not legal incapacity.”
Correct.
Then the original transaction file surfaced.
Independent valuation.
Separate counsel for Richard.
Board minutes.
Financial disclosures.
No secret signing.
No midnight amendment.
Richard had been fully represented.
Caroline’s challenge weakened.
But not disappeared.
Then Lauren asked:
“Why did Evelyn wait eleven years to tell Caroline?”
Evelyn answered:
“Because nobody asked me who owned the house.”
Cold.
