Chapter 9 - DEREK FLIPS

Derek protected Caroline until criminal exposure became possible.

Then he hired separate counsel.

Smart.

His lawyer advised cooperation.

Derek admitted:

he created the signature file system.

He processed vendor consulting invoices.

He routed lender documents.

Then:

“Who told you to use Richard’s signature?”

Derek hesitated.

“Caroline.”

Caroline’s attorney objected outside deposition.

Later Derek produced texts.

CAROLINE:

Use Dad’s standard signature. He won’t care.

DEREK:

That’s not authorization.

CAROLINE:

Stop acting scared.

Then:

DEREK:

What if Evelyn sees?

CAROLINE:

She’s basically staff. She sees what we let her see.

Evelyn read that twice.

Not because it shocked her.

Because it clarified everything.

They did not merely treat her like a servant.

They believed service meant irrelevance.

Then Derek revealed another plan.

Caroline intended to pressure Richard into changing the trust.

How?

By proving Evelyn was “not family-minded.”

She collected examples:

Evelyn refusing requests,

limiting cash gifts,

objecting to guest use,

challenging Caroline’s spending.

Caroline wanted Richard to believe Evelyn was turning against his daughter.

Then push amendment.

Problem:

Richard could not unilaterally remove Evelyn as controlling trustee.

Caroline had misunderstood the structure.

She had built leverage against the wrong person.
