Chapter 11 - THE FATHER WHO ALMOST REPEATED IT
Mark wanted Eli to testify aggressively.
Tell everything.
Describe David.
Describe Richard.
Repeat the phrase.
Rachel stopped him.
“He’s eleven.”
“He’s the witness.”
“He’s your son first.”
Mark snapped:
“This is how Dad wins. Everyone protects him.”
Eli heard from the hallway.
Later he asked:
“Do I have to go to court?”
Mark froze.
“No.”
“Are you sure?”
Mark looked at his son.
Eli’s face was afraid in a way that had nothing to do with David now.
He was afraid of disappointing his father.
Mark felt sick.
Sarah’s emails came back.
Mark will defend his father first.
Now Mark was in danger of turning Eli into a weapon against that same father.
Different side.
Same misuse.
He sat beside Eli.
“You tell the truth when somebody safe asks. That’s all.”
“What if I forget?”
“Then you say you forgot.”
“What if Grandpa gets away with it?”
Mark paused.
“That’s not your job.”
