Chapter 3 - THE QUESTION MARK DIDN'T EXPECT
Mark did not ask Eli what he had done wrong.
He asked:
“Who hurt you?”
That mattered.
Eli started crying before he could answer.
“Uncle David.”
Mark’s face changed.
“What happened?”
“They wanted Mom’s phrase.”
Mark froze.
“What phrase?”
Eli looked confused.
“You don’t know?”
“No.”
The hospital found:
a split lip,
redness on both cheeks,
scraped palms,
minor ankle sprain.
No fracture.
No concussion.
Lucky.
Police took a report.
Eli described:
David slapping him twice,
Richard present,
the tablet,
the demand for a phrase,
the escape.
Then an officer asked:
“What phrase?”
Eli looked at Mark.
Mark said:
“You don’t have to say it out loud right now.”
Good.
Later, in the private room, Eli whispered:
“Blue train. Seven bridges. Winter light.”
Mark sat down.
He knew none of it.
Then he remembered Sarah’s note.
CHECK THE VAULT.
His chest tightened.
“Did Mom tell you what the phrase opens?”
“No.”
“She ever show you a website?”
“No.”
“Email?”
“No.”
“She just said remember it.”
Mark stared through the hospital window.
Richard and David knew the phrase existed.
Meaning Sarah told someone.
Or someone found evidence.
Mark called attorney Rachel Sloan.
“Something bigger is happening.”
Rachel answered:
“I know.”
“How?”
“Your accountant called me yesterday.”
Mark went still.
“What did he find?”
