Chapter 7 - THE VAULT OPENS

Police and counsel agreed Eli should not be pressured to participate directly.

He had already disclosed the phrase.

A forensic examiner used it under warrant and court protocol.

Vault opened.

Inside:

312 files.

Not a perfect smoking gun.

Better.

Messier.

Bank statements.

Vendor invoices.

Trust minutes.

Email exports.

Spreadsheets.

Voice notes.

Sarah had been building a record.

One spreadsheet compared:

North Bridge fees,

outside-market rates,

actual work product.

Estimated excess:

$1.26 million.

Not every dollar improper.

Then another vendor:

Carter Administrative Services.

Owned by Richard through a family office entity.

Trust paid:

$420,000 over four years.

Some legitimate bookkeeping.

Some duplicate with North Bridge services.

Then emails.

SARAH:

We’re charging the kids’ trust twice for overlapping work.

RICHARD:

You don’t understand family-office accounting.

SARAH:

Then explain why the same quarterly review appears on both invoices.

No answer.

Another:

DAVID:

She keeps asking for backup.

RICHARD:

Give her summaries, not source files.

That looked bad.

Then one voice note.

Sarah’s voice.

Tired.

“If they can explain it, fine. But if they can’t, Eli’s trust is being treated like a family checking account.”

Mark stopped breathing.

Her voice had been gone seven months.

Now it was in the room.
