Chapter 5 - THE TABLET

Police obtained Sarah’s tablet from Richard’s basement.

Richard did not resist.

He claimed:

Mark left it in storage after Sarah died.

Mark denied that.

The device was old but functional.

Passcode locked.

Digital forensics extracted metadata.

One application stood out:

VaultBox Secure.

Cloud storage.

Login email:

sarah.carter.archive@protonmail-style service.

Password unknown.

Recovery method:

custom phrase + device key.

The custom phrase field length matched Eli’s three-part sentence.

Blue train.

Seven bridges.

Winter light.

Eli had not been given a password.

He had been given the human half of a recovery system.

Smart.

Why involve a child?

Rachel hated that.

So did Mark.

Sarah must have feared adults would search her devices.

But a child remembering a strange phrase looked harmless.

Until Richard discovered it.

How?

The tablet contained one unsent draft note:

If I’m gone, Eli knows the phrase. Mark will know what to do.

But Mark had never seen that draft.

Richard had the tablet.

He saw it.

Then asked Eli.

That was the bridge.
