Chapter 12 - RICHARD'S CONFESSION

Richard requested mediation.

Mark almost refused.

Then agreed without Eli.

Richard looked older.

Not broken.

Still Richard.

He said:

“I did not steal from that trust.”

Mark answered:

“You overpaid David.”

“I paid for services.”

“Too much.”

“Perhaps.”

“Why?”

Richard stared.

Then:

“Because David needed help.”

There.

Family-office logic.

Richard believed wealth existed to stabilize the family.

If one son struggled, family entities could hire his company.

If the work was worth something, paying above market felt like support, not theft.

Mark said:

“You used children’s money.”

Richard’s face hardened.

“The trust grew from three million to almost seven.”

“That doesn’t make every fee yours to decide.”

“I was trustee.”

“Exactly.”

Silence.

Then Mark asked:

“Why didn’t you stop David?”

Richard knew which moment he meant.

Basement.

He looked down.

“I thought he’d calm down.”

“After the first slap?”

“Yes.”

“And the second?”

Richard closed his eyes.

“I froze.”

Mark laughed bitterly.

“You always called freezing weakness.”

Richard nodded.

May you like

“I know.”

First honest thing.
