Chapter 1 - I HOPED I WAS WRONG

Claire Bennett had been married for four hours when her husband locked the bridal-suite door from the inside.
The click was small.
Ordinary.
It should not have frightened her.
But it did.
The wedding had been beautiful.
White roses.
Crystal chandeliers.
Two hundred guests.
A string quartet under the hotel’s glass atrium.
Adrian Hale standing beneath the arch in a black suit, smiling at Claire as if nothing in the world existed beyond the two of them.
He had been attentive all evening.
Protective.
Charming.
Almost too charming.
Now the suite was silent.
Claire stood beside the bed in her wedding dress, fingers still resting on the zipper of her overnight bag.
Adrian removed his jacket.
Then his cuff links.
Then he reached into a slim leather case on the dresser.
Claire watched.
“What’s that?”
He did not answer immediately.
He took out a narrow leather strap.
Then a folded sheet of paper.
He tossed the paper onto the bed.
Claire stared at it.
Handwritten lines.
Numbered.
Rules.
Adrian looked at her.
“From tonight on, you follow my rules.”
For one second, Claire thought he was joking.
Then she saw his face.
No smile.
No softness.
Nothing left of the man from the ballroom.
She picked up the page.
RULE ONE: Never question me.
RULE TWO: Do not discuss private matters with outsiders.
RULE THREE: No separate accounts.
RULE FOUR: No leaving the house without telling me.
RULE FIVE: My decisions are final.
Claire’s stomach went cold.
“Adrian…”
He stepped toward her.
“What?”
“What is this?”
“Our marriage.”
“No.”
His expression tightened.
“No?”
Claire lowered the paper.
“This is not a marriage.”
Adrian laughed.
Not the warm laugh she knew.
Something smaller.
Crueler.
“You’ll adjust.”
Claire’s heart started pounding.
He snapped the leather strap sharply against the floor.
The sound cracked through the room.
Claire flinched.
Adrian saw.
He liked that she flinched.
That mattered.
“Rule one,” he said. “Never question me.”
Claire stared at him.
The fear lasted exactly three seconds.
Then something inside her settled.
She had spent months wondering whether she was imagining things.
The way Adrian checked her phone and called it teasing.
The way he criticized her friends and called it concern.
The way he insisted on combining accounts before the wedding.
The way he spoke about “discipline” and “respect” when angry.
The way his first fiancée disappeared from his life without explanation.
Claire had wanted to believe love had made her suspicious.
Now she knew better.
Her face went still.
“Open the door.”
Adrian laughed again.
“Excuse me?”
“Open the door.”
He stepped closer.
“You don’t tell me what to do anymore.”
Claire’s eyes sharpened.
“Then get out of my way.”
Adrian reached for her wrist.
That was his mistake.
Claire moved before he understood what happened.
She twisted free.
Caught his forearm.
Turned her body.
Adrian stumbled.
Claire trapped his wrist, redirected his momentum, and forced him face-down onto the carpet.
The leather strap fell beside him.
Adrian shouted:
“LET GO!”
Claire pinned his arm behind his back.
Not enough to injure.
Enough to control.
His breathing turned ragged.
“What the hell are you doing?!”
Claire leaned closer.
“You picked the wrong wife.”
Adrian struggled.
His confidence vanished so quickly it almost looked theatrical.
“Get off me!”
Claire kept him down with one knee braced beside his shoulder.
Then reached toward her overnight bag.
Adrian’s face changed.
“What are you doing?”
Claire opened the zipper.
Pulled out a sealed legal envelope.
Annulment papers.
Adrian stopped moving.
His eyes widened.
Claire held the papers beside his face.
He stared at them.
Then at her.
“You planned this?!”
Claire looked down at him.
May you like
Her eyes filled with angry tears.
“I hoped I was wrong.”
