Chapter 2 - THE FIRST RED FLAG WAS NOT THE STRAP
Claire did not prepare annulment papers because of one argument.
She prepared them because of six months of contradictions.
The first one seemed harmless.
Adrian wanted her to close an old checking account.
“It’s pointless to keep separate money after marriage,” he said.
Claire disagreed.
He smiled.
Then asked again the next week.
Then the next.
Then he requested access to her brokerage account “for transparency.”
Claire refused.
He stopped smiling.
A month later, he criticized her best friend, Mara Chen.
“She puts ideas in your head.”
Claire laughed.
“What ideas?”
“That you need independence from your husband.”
“I’m not your wife yet.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“Exactly.”
That answer stayed with Claire.
Then came the phone incidents.
He asked for her passcode.
She said no.
He accused her of hiding something.
She pointed out he had never offered his.
He answered:
“That’s different.”
Why?
He never explained.
Then one evening, Claire discovered a shared-location request installed on her phone.
Adrian called it a safety feature.
She removed it.
He did not speak to her for two days.
The silence was punishment.
Claire recognized that before she admitted it.
She began writing things down.
Dates.
Words.
Patterns.
Not because she wanted evidence for court.
