Chapter 5 - THE RULE SHEET HAD ANOTHER PURPOSE
The handwritten rules were ugly.
The financial documents Adrian prepared the same night were worse.
After Claire forced him to the floor and called hotel security, Adrian tried to change the narrative immediately.
He claimed she attacked him without provocation.
Security entered.
Saw the leather strap.
Saw the rules.
Saw the annulment envelope.
Claire released Adrian and stepped back.
Rebecca arrived within forty minutes.
So did a police officer.
No one was arrested that night.
Claire had no visible injury.
Adrian had mild redness on one wrist from being restrained.
Both gave statements.
Then Rebecca noticed another folder on the dresser.
Adrian tried to stop her from opening it.
That was enough to make Claire curious.
Inside were:
a post-marital financial agreement,
a joint-account authorization,
a beneficiary change form,
and a power-of-attorney draft.
Claire stared.
“I never agreed to these.”
Adrian answered:
“You were going to.”
The wording was aggressive.
Claire’s premarital investment account would become jointly administered.
Adrian would receive broad authority over certain assets.
Emergency medical decisions would designate him first.
A clause limited Claire’s ability to make major charitable gifts without spousal consent.
Rebecca looked at Adrian.
“Who drafted this?”
He said nothing.
