Chapter 4 - WHY CLAIRE PREPARED THE PAPERS
Claire hired attorney Mara Chen’s colleague, Rebecca Sloan, three weeks before the wedding.
Rebecca specialized in family law and coercive-control cases.
Claire told her:
“I don’t know if I’m canceling the wedding.”
Rebecca answered:
“Then we prepare for both choices.”
Claire signed nothing that day.
She only asked questions.
What happens if a spouse reveals controlling or threatening behavior immediately after marriage?
Can an annulment apply?
What if there was deception about fundamental intentions?
What if financial agreements were signed under pressure?
Rebecca explained carefully.
Annulment is not automatic just because someone becomes cruel.
Divorce may still be the proper route.
But if evidence showed fraud, coercion, lack of genuine consent to key terms, or other qualifying circumstances, a court might consider annulment depending on jurisdiction and facts.
Claire asked:
“Can we draft papers without filing?”
“Yes.”
“Do it.”
Rebecca did.
The envelope in Claire’s overnight bag was not a guarantee.
It was a contingency.
A boundary made tangible.
Claire told no one except Mara.
Not her parents.
Not her sister.
Not even Evelyn.
She still married Adrian.
Why?
Because he apologized.
Because he was gentle for three weeks.
Because he cried when Claire confronted him about the location tracking.
Because he said:
“I’m scared of losing you.”
Claire wanted to believe fear explained control.
