Chapter 6 - ADRIAN'S FAMILY KNEW

The next betrayal came from Adrian’s mother.
Margaret Hale called Claire the morning after the wedding.
“I’m sorry.”
Claire was staying in another hotel room under security.
“What are you sorry for?”
Margaret cried.
“For not warning you.”
Claire’s face went cold.
“You knew?”
“Not everything.”
“What did you know?”
Margaret knew Evelyn had left Adrian after “control issues.”
She knew Adrian’s father used money to keep the breakup quiet.
She knew a previous domestic-disturbance call had been made to Adrian’s apartment.
No charges.
No prosecution.
But real.
Margaret had convinced herself Adrian changed.
Therapy.
Anger management.
Two years without incidents.
Claire asked:
“Did he do therapy?”
Margaret hesitated.
“I thought so.”
Records later showed he attended four sessions.
Then stopped.
His family kept telling everyone he completed treatment.
Why?
Image.
Hale Holdings was preparing Adrian for executive succession.
A public domestic-abuse narrative could threaten board confidence.
Claire realized the wedding was not just personal to them.
It was reputational insulation for him.
Married.
Stable.
May you like
Respectable.
And she had been selected as part of the picture.
