Chapter 3 - THE WOMAN BEFORE CLAIRE

Claire found Adrian’s first fiancée by accident.
Her name was Evelyn Reed.
The Hale family never mentioned her.
Adrian said the engagement ended because Evelyn was “unstable.”
He used that word too easily.
Claire searched old public records.
Engagement announcement.
Charity gala photos.
Then nothing.
No wedding.
No breakup statement.
No social posts.
Evelyn moved from Chicago to Portland nine months later.
Claire almost let it go.
Then Mara said:
“Call her.”
Claire hesitated.
“That feels intrusive.”
Mara looked at her.
“So does checking your phone while you sleep.”
Claire called.
Evelyn answered after three attempts.
At first she refused to talk.
Then Claire said:
“I’m engaged to Adrian Hale.”
Silence.
A long one.
Then Evelyn whispered:
“Has he started making rules yet?”
Claire’s stomach dropped.
“What rules?”
Evelyn laughed without humor.
“Not yet, then.”
She would not say more on the phone.
They met two weeks later at a café near O’Hare.
Evelyn was thirty-six.
Calm.
Successful.
Nothing like the unstable woman Adrian described.
She told Claire:
“It started after the wedding plans got serious.”
Separate friends became “disrespect.”
Separate money became “betrayal.”
Disagreement became “disobedience.”
Claire listened.
Then asked:
“Did he hit you?”
Evelyn looked down.
“No.”
That answer surprised Claire.
“He never needed to.”
“What do you mean?”
“He used fear before he used force.”
Doors locked.
Objects slammed.
Threats disguised as jokes.
Financial pressure.
Isolation.
Then Evelyn said:
“The first time he showed me the rule sheet, I laughed.”
Claire felt cold.
“A rule sheet?”
May you like
Evelyn nodded.
“Handwritten.”
