Chapter 1 - SHE FELL

Sarah Bennett heard Emily screaming before she reached the kitchen.
Not crying.
Screaming.
She dropped her work bag in the hallway and ran through the patio door.
Rachel stood beside the garden hose.
The nozzle was aimed directly at Emily.
Water blasted across the eight-year-old’s soaked clothes and wet hair.
Emily crawled backward over the patio stones, one arm covering her face.
“STOP! PLEASE!”
Rachel kept spraying.
“Hold still!”
Sarah crossed the patio in three steps.
She ripped the hose from Rachel’s hand.
Shut the water off.
“WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!”
Rachel looked irritated.
Not frightened.
Not ashamed.
She pointed at Emily.
“She fell. She was dirty.”
Sarah looked down.
Emily was trembling.
A gauze bandage covered one eye.
The bandage was soaked.
Sarah’s stomach dropped.
She knelt and pulled Emily against her.
“What happened to her eye?”
Rachel shrugged.
“She tripped near the planter.”
Sarah did not argue.
She lifted Emily.
Carried her straight toward the driveway.
Rachel followed.
“Sarah, you’re overreacting.”
Sarah put Emily in the passenger seat.
Shut the door.
Then crouched beside the open window.
Emily grabbed her hand with both of hers.
“Tell me what happened.”
Emily looked toward the house.
Her lips shook.
“I fell AFTER she sprayed me.”
Sarah froze.
Emily leaned closer.
“She told me to lie.”
Sarah slowly looked back at Rachel.
Rachel was coming down the walkway.
Fast.
Emily recoiled.
“DON’T LET HER TAKE ME!”
Sarah stood.
Closed the car door.
Then stepped between Rachel and her daughter.
For the first time in their marriage, Sarah did not ask Rachel for an explanation.

She said only:
“Stay away from the car.”
