Chapter 14 - THE TRUTH WITHOUT A PERFORMANCE

Months later, Emily returned to Dr. Carter for a routine visit.

No eye bandage.

No wet clothes.

No emergency.

Dr. Carter asked:

“How are things?”

Emily looked at Sarah.

Sarah said nothing.

Emily answered herself.

“Better.”

“Do you feel safe at home?”

“Yes.”

“Do you still worry about telling the truth?”

Emily thought.

“Sometimes.”

Dr. Carter nodded.

“That can take time.”

No dramatic speech.

No celebration.

Just permission.

After the appointment, Emily asked Sarah:

“Did I make you divorce Rachel?”

Sarah stopped walking.

“No.”

“But I told.”

“You told the truth.”

“Then you divorced.”

Sarah crouched.

“I made an adult decision because of adult behavior.”

Emily watched her.

“So it wasn’t my fault?”

Sarah answered carefully:

“It was not your job to protect our marriage by staying quiet.”

Emily nodded.

That distinction mattered.
