Chapter 8 - SARAH'S OWN FAILURE
Sarah wanted Rachel to be the only villain.
Dana would not let her.
“How often are you away?”
Sarah worked hospital administration.
Late shifts.
Weekend coverage.
Emergency calls.
Rachel handled many afternoons.
Sarah had seen signs.
Emily asking:
“Are you working late?”
Emily refusing baths when Rachel was home.
Emily wanting to sleep in Sarah’s room after arguments.
Sarah interpreted it as adjustment problems.
She had wanted the marriage to work.
Wanted Emily to accept Rachel.
Wanted Rachel to feel like a real parent.
So when Emily complained that Rachel was “mean,” Sarah often said:
“She loves you. Give her a chance.”
Sarah cried when she remembered that.

But she had taught Emily that discomfort was something to overcome for the adults.
