Chapter 11 - THE HOUSE IS NOT WORTH THIS

Sarah’s turning point came when Richard called from his attorney’s office.
He asked her to withdraw part of her statement.
Not lie.
“Clarify.”
He said Emily had been emotional.
He said the hospital assault was “one movement.”
He said:
“If you ruin me, you ruin yourself.”
Sarah believed that once.
Now she looked at mortgage papers.
Then at Emily recovering in a short-term apartment provided through victim services.
The house.
Thirty years old.
Needs roof work.
Too much debt.
Sarah suddenly understood.
She had spent years protecting a building by sacrificing people inside it.
She told Richard:
“I’ll sell it.”
Silence.
“What?”
“The house.”
“You can’t.”
“I can.”
“You’ll lose money.”
“Probably.”
“We built everything around that house.”
“No. You built everything around debt.”
Richard started shouting.
Sarah hung up.
Then called Emily.
“I’m selling.”
Emily said nothing.
Sarah continued:
“I should’ve chosen you before the house.”
Emily answered:
“Yes.”
No comforting.
No instant forgiveness.
Sarah cried.
May you like
“Okay.”
That honesty was the beginning.
