Chapter 8 - THE PAYROLL FILE
Cole Property Services stored payroll through a cloud service.
Richard believed he had deleted older entries.
He had not.
Audit logs showed:
Emily’s employee record created three years earlier.
Created by:
Richard.
Edited later by:
Sarah.
Emily stared at her mother.
Sarah froze.
“What did you edit?”
“Address.”
“Why?”
“Richard said payroll mail was going to the wrong place.”
“What address?”
A private mailbox.
Sarah changed it to the house.
That sounded helpful.
Then:
tax withholding status.
Sarah had edited that too.
“Why?”
“He told me to.”
Again.
Then investigators found a note attached to Emily’s profile:
They also found quarterly payroll reports.
Each one showed taxes supposedly withheld from Emily’s fake salary.
But the taxes were not consistently remitted.
That created another problem.
The company had effectively used a fake employee to improve financial statements while also accruing payroll tax debt tied to that fake employment.
Emily asked:
“Can they come after me?”
Lewis answered:
“They may send notices first. Then we correct the record.”
“How long?”
“Months, maybe longer.”
Emily laughed bitterly.
Richard could create the lie in minutes.
She would spend months proving she never worked there.
Then investigators found a note attached to Emily’s profile:
Do not mail employee documents. Digital only.
Richard controlled login.
Email:
an address that looked like Emily’s.
emily.carter.ops@...
Richard created it.
He had built a fake employee identity around a real person.
Real SSN.
Real birth date.
Fake job.
Fake email.
Fake salary.
That identity had:

insurance value,

tax value.
Emily had become an asset inside his company without ever setting foot in the office.
