Chapter 15 - EVERYTHING SHE EATS

Two years later, Emily made dinner in her own apartment.
Pasta.
Salad.
Garlic bread.
Too much garlic.
She liked it that way.
Sarah visited.
They ate.
No Richard.
No company.
No payroll file.
No fake salary.
No one calculating value against food.
Then Sarah pushed her plate away.
“I’m full.”
Emily froze for half a second.
Old sentence echoed:
earn back everything she eats.
Then disappeared.
Sarah noticed.
“I’m sorry.”
Emily shook her head.
“Don’t.”
They sat.
Then Emily laughed.
“What?”
“I used to think I had to justify groceries.”
Sarah looked down.
“I know.”
“No. I mean even before the hospital.”
Emily leaned back.
“Like if I bought coffee, I needed to explain why.”
Sarah nodded slowly.
Richard had turned money into morality.
Expense meant weakness.
Need meant debt.
Rest meant theft.
Recovery meant laziness.
Everything had a price.
Then Emily reached for another piece of garlic bread.
A completely unnecessary one.
She smiled.
Sarah laughed.
“Living dangerously?”
“Absolutely.”
Later, Emily opened her banking app.
Paycheck.
Her real paycheck.
One employer.
One tax form.
One account.
She transferred money to savings.
Then spent twelve dollars on movie tickets.
No explanation.
The hospital scar had faded.
The bruises gone.
The most persistent injury had been the belief that survival required earning permission.
That took longer.
Then her phone buzzed.
A message from Sarah:
HOME SAFE.
Emily replied:
GOOD.
Then another message came.
Sarah:
I bought a lamp.
Emily smiled.
“Congratulations?”
Sarah sent a photograph.
Cheap yellow lamp.
Nothing special.
But Sarah chose it herself.
No Richard asking cost-per-use.
No lecture about electricity.
No business cash crisis deciding whether light was allowed.
Emily typed:
IT’S UGLY.
Sarah replied:
I LOVE IT.
Emily laughed.
Then her phone buzzed.
A message from Sarah:
HOME SAFE.
Emily replied:
GOOD.
No report.
No control.
Just care.
She washed dishes.
Turned off the kitchen light.
Then opened the refrigerator.
Full.
She took out dessert.
Sat on the couch.
May you like
And ate it without earning a single bite.
THE END
