Chapter 12 - THE COMPANY COLLAPSES
Cole Property Services filed bankruptcy.
Not because Emily exposed it.
It was already insolvent.
That mattered.
The company owed more than it could reasonably repay.
Several contracts were profitable.
Most were not.
Richard had been using new credit to support old obligations.
Classic collapse.
Then supplier lawsuits.
One supplier owner, David Kerr, testified that Richard had begged for another sixty days.
“I have family backing.”
David believed that meant wealthy relatives.
It actually meant Emily’s fake salary and Sarah’s home equity.
Another subcontractor said Richard repeatedly promised:
“My daughter runs operations now. She’s cleaning everything up.”
Emily had never met him.
The lie had become public identity.
People were extending patience because they believed a younger generation was stabilizing the business.
That made Emily’s name economically useful even before any forged signature.
Then supplier lawsuits.
Tax authorities.
Lenders.
The fake payroll complicated everything.
Some workers lost jobs.
Emily felt guilty.
Lewis told her:
“Those jobs were already attached to a failing company.”
Still hurt.
Then Richard blamed her publicly through family members.
“If Emily had just signed the claim, we could’ve stabilized.”
One disability payment:
$4,200 a month.
Not enough to save a company owing hundreds of thousands.
But Richard believed in bridges.
One more loan.
One more policy.
One more paycheck.
