Chapter 2 - STEP AWAY FROM HER

Emily stared at him.
“DO YOU ONLY CARE ABOUT MONEY?!”
Richard leaned closer.
“Without money, you’re nothing but dead weight.”
Her eyes filled.
She reached toward the nurse-call button.
Richard saw.
Moved faster.
SLAP.
Emily fell sideways beside the bed.
Pain ripped through her abdomen.
“GET AWAY FROM ME!”
Sarah rushed forward.
“SHE JUST HAD SURGERY!”
Richard pointed down.
“Then she can recover after she earns back everything she eats!”
Sarah froze.
Emily looked at her mother.
Not Richard.
Sarah’s face showed horror.
And recognition.
As if she had heard versions of that sentence before.
Richard raised his hand again.
The nurse burst in.
“DON’T TOUCH HER!”
Richard snapped:
“SHE LIVES UNDER MY ROOF!”
The nurse stepped between them.
Two police officers entered behind her.
“STEP AWAY FROM HER. NOW!”
Richard spun.
“What the hell?!”
One officer moved between Richard and Emily.
The other took Sarah aside.
The nurse helped Emily back onto the bed.
Richard slowly lowered his hand.
Then looked at Sarah.
Not apologetic.
Accusing.
“You called them?”
Sarah shook her head.
The nurse said:
“I did.”
Richard looked stunned.
Then angry.
“You don’t know this family.”
The nurse answered:
“I know what I saw.”
Emily looked at Richard.
For the first time in years, another adult had said it without softening.
Not:
he’s stressed.
Not:
he didn’t mean it.
What I saw.
Then Officer Martinez asked Emily:
“Do you feel safe going home with him?”
Emily opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Sarah stared.
Richard stared.
The nurse waited.
Emily finally said:
“No.”
One word.
Richard’s face changed.
Not rage.
May you like
Fear.
That was when Emily realized the hospital confrontation had threatened something bigger than his pride.
