Chapter 15 - WHO ARTHUR BELIEVED

One year later, Clara was ten.
Lily was eight.
Elena still worked at the Caldwell house.
By choice.
Clara sat on the living-room sofa reading.
Same place.
Same kind of pajamas.
The pearl locket rested against her chest.
Arthur walked in.
“What are you reading?”
She showed him.
He pretended to understand the fantasy title.
Lily ran down the hallway.
“Elena says dinner!”
From the dining room Elena shouted:
“I said five minutes!”
Lily shouted back:
“That means now!”
Arthur laughed.
The cameras still existed.
But he no longer watched them compulsively.
After a moment, Clara asked:
“Dad?”
“Yeah?”
“If there weren’t cameras, would you have believed Seraphina?”
Arthur did not answer quickly.
Finally:
“I want to say no.”
Clara watched him.
“But?”
“But I trusted her.”
Clara looked down at the locket.
“And Elena?”
“I trusted Elena too.”
“Then who would you believe?”
Arthur exhaled.
“I would have needed to slow down and find out.”
Clara nodded.
That was a better answer than pretending he had always been wise.
Then she said:
“She forgot about the cameras.”
Arthur smiled slightly.
“Yes.”
But that was not Seraphina’s biggest mistake.
Her biggest mistake was assuming Elena’s place in the household came from being believed less than the future wife.
Assuming Clara’s home could become negotiable.
Assuming Arthur’s love made him easy to redirect.
The cameras caught the frame.
The children exposed the cruelty.
Elena’s records revealed the pattern.
Arthur’s job had been to listen to all three.
Clara opened her book again.
Arthur stood.
“Dinner.”
She looked up.
“Can I finish the chapter?”
Arthur smiled.
“This is your home.”
Clara smiled back.
May you like
Then closed the book anyway.
