Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN WHO HEARD THE PHONE

Grant survived.
Barely conscious.
Broken collarbone.
Three cracked ribs.
Concussion.
No spinal injury.
No internal bleeding requiring surgery.
The other driver survived too.
Police found Grant’s phone under the passenger seat.
The call was still connected.
A responding officer heard a child crying.
“Tessa?”
Silence.
Then:
“Who are you?”
“Police. Your dad was in an accident.”
Tessa screamed.
The officer immediately asked for the address.
Within minutes, local police and paramedics reached the Miller home.
They found:
Tessa on the kitchen floor,
Miles still strapped to her,
an empty bottle,
a dead phone charger,
no adult.
No Laura.
Tessa had been alone with Miles for almost five hours.
The child-protection response began immediately.
Not because Grant crashed.
Because Laura was missing.
Then, at 6:42 p.m., Laura walked through the front door.
Carrying a shopping bag.
She froze when she saw police.
“What happened?”
Tessa looked at her.
Not relief.
Betrayal.
“You left us.”
Laura’s face changed.
“I told you I’d be right back.”
The officer asked:
“Where were you?”
Laura answered too quickly.
“At my sister’s.”

There was only one problem.
Her sister lived three hours away.
