Chapter 1 - THE NECKLACE

Claire Bennett Carter had worn her mother’s necklace only four times in twelve years.

Her wedding.

Emma’s christening.

Her mother’s memorial.

And tonight.

It was old-fashioned:

white-gold chain,

small diamond clusters,

oval blue sapphire at the center.

Not enormous.

Not royal.

Not something strangers would photograph.

But to Claire it was the last object that still smelled like her mother’s cedar jewelry box.

Daniel knew that.

Which was why the moment he grabbed it, Claire understood this was not an argument about money.

He slapped her first.

The blow snapped her face sideways.

Then his hand closed around the chain.

“GIVE IT!”

Claire locked both hands over the necklace.

“NO!”

Daniel yanked.

The chain dug into her neck.

Claire twisted, tore free, and pressed the necklace against her chest.

“It was my mother’s!”

“I NEED THE MONEY!”

“NEVER!”

Daniel’s expression changed.

He let go.

For one second Claire thought he had stopped.

Then he crossed the room and grabbed Emma.

Six years old.

Pajamas.

Crying before she even understood why.

Daniel yanked her in front of his body and locked one arm around her torso.

“MOMMY!”

Claire froze.

“LET HER GO!”

Daniel’s free hand snatched a kitchen knife from the counter.

He held it visibly beside him.

Not against Emma.

Not touching her.

But there.

“Necklace. NOW.”

Emma reached toward Claire.

“Mommy!”

Claire’s hands shook.

She unclasped the necklace.

Held it out.

Daniel extended his hand.

“Emma first.”

“GIVE IT.”

Claire’s eyes moved.

Heavy glass bottle beside the fruit bowl.

She grabbed it.

Raised it over her shoulder.

Stepped forward.

“LET HER GO!”

Daniel froze.

Emma cried harder.

Claire pulled the bottle back.

Then a voice came from the open doorway.

“Put the knife down.”

Daniel turned.

His brother Michael stood there with a phone in his hand.

911 connected.

Daniel’s face collapsed.

Not from guilt.

May you like

From calculation.

The lie he had been trying to save had just become evidence.
