Chapter 11 - THE BUSINESS WASN'T WORTH SAVING

An independent accountant reviewed Carter Hospitality Systems.

Daniel had told everyone:

one good quarter would fix it.

False.

The company had:

$1.9 million liabilities,

$1.2 million collectible assets,

shrinking margins,

three disputed receivables,

personal guarantees layered across debt.

Could it survive?

Possibly through restructuring.

But not in current form.

Daniel had been borrowing to preserve the appearance of continuity.

He feared:

employees losing jobs,

vendors suing,

Michael seeing him fail,

Claire seeing him as weak.

Then gambling?

No.

Mistress?

No.

Luxury spending?

Minimal.

Most money went into the business.

That made the tragedy more plausible.

Daniel did not destroy his family chasing pleasure.

He destroyed it trying to prevent failure.

Still his choices.

Then one email to his accountant:

If Claire sees the full debt stack, she’ll make me shut it down.

There.

He knew disclosure would change her consent.

So he withheld it.
