Chapter 9 - CLAIRE'S MOTHER LEFT MORE THAN JEWELRY
Evelyn Bennett had been meticulous.
Her estate file contained a letter about the necklace.
CLAIRE—
This belonged to my grandmother. I want you to have it as your separate property. Do not ever feel obligated to sell it to solve someone else’s emergency.
Claire cried when she read it.
She had forgotten the last sentence.
Then another document.
A deed of gift executed before Claire’s marriage.
The necklace was clearly transferred to Claire individually.
That weakened any claim it was marital collateral.
Then an insurance schedule.
Beneficiary and owner:
Claire.
Daniel had seen these records.
At least some.
Because his initials appeared on the insurance household inventory page.
He could not plausibly say he thought the necklace belonged to both of them.
Lauren’s defense narrowed.
