Chapter 1 - THE BOWL

Claire Whitmore was halfway through reaching for her lobster soup when Vanessa Hart snatched the bowl from her hands.
“Vanessa!”
Every conversation around the dining room softened.
Vanessa, six months pregnant and wearing white, smiled as if she had won something.
“I’m pregnant. I need it more than you.”
Claire stared.
Ryan was not yet in the room.
Good for him.
Because if he had been there, Claire might have finally said what she knew.
The affair.
The hotel room charges.
The private messages.
The way Ryan’s voice changed when Vanessa called.
Claire had spent three weeks pretending not to know because her attorney wanted one clean audit before divorce papers appeared.
Vanessa lifted the spoon.
“Best thing I’ve eaten all day.”
She ate.
Then another spoonful.
Then another.
Claire stood in silence while family members watched with the uncomfortable fascination of people witnessing cruelty dressed as confidence.
Vanessa scraped the bowl clean.
At that exact moment, Ryan entered.
He saw the empty bowl.
Stopped.
His face drained of color.
“No…”
Claire’s anger disappeared.
Ryan rushed forward and grabbed the bowl with shaking hands.
“WHY THE HELL DID YOU EAT THIS?”
Vanessa jumped.
“Ryan! What is wrong with you?”
“You weren’t supposed to touch it!”
The room went silent.
Claire looked from Ryan to the bowl.
Something inside her went cold.
Vanessa slowly stood.
“What do you mean I wasn’t supposed to eat it?”
Claire stepped toward her husband.
“Ryan.”
He looked at her.
“What is in that soup?”
For the first time in sixteen years, Claire saw pure fear on his face.
Not guilt.
Not yet.
Fear.
Then Vanessa gasped.
Her hands flew to her stomach.
“Ryan…”
He spun toward her.
“Vanessa?”
She doubled over.
“My baby!”
Someone shouted for an ambulance.
Ryan caught Vanessa as her knees buckled.
Claire backed away from the table, staring at him.
He kept saying Vanessa’s name.
But he never once asked what she had eaten.
May you like
He already knew.
And that was the first thing Claire would remember later.
