Chapter 13 - THE BOARD WITHOUT RYAN

The emergency hearing lasted nine hours.

Ryan still fought.

His attorney argued that requesting a prescription did not prove placing it in soup.

True.

The bottle in Claire’s travel bag had been moved by Susan.

True.

Megan handled the delivery.

True.

The restaurant footage did not show Ryan touching the bowl.

True.

Every link had another hand on it.

That had been the plan’s strength.

Then the restaurant manager produced one final record.

A voice memo automatically attached to VIP service instructions.

Ryan’s voice:

“Claire’s serving stays separate. No swaps. No substitutions. I don’t care who asks.”

Why record it?

The manager explained their staff used voice confirmations for unusual dietary requests.

Ryan had forgotten.

Or never known.

Then the chef testified.

Ryan handed him a small sealed packet and said it was a doctor-approved additive for Claire’s stomach.

The chef had not opened it.

He assumed a billionaire client knew his own wife’s medical needs.

That decision would haunt him too.

Ryan’s attorney attacked chain of custody.

No packet remained.

No direct chemical proof.

But the pattern was now strong.

Refill.

Tablet.

Bottle.

Kitchen.

Separate bowl.

Panic.

Forty-eight-hour governance window.

Emergency advisory fee.

Then Claire did something Ryan did not expect.

She supported Harbor Crown.

Again.

“Whitmore Coastal should buy it,” she told the board.

“Under independent financing and independent management review.”

Leonard asked:

“And Ryan?”

“Removed from all transaction authority.”

Ryan laughed.

“You cannot separate me from the deal I built.”

Claire looked at him.

“That’s the point.”

The board voted.

Harbor Crown approved in principle.

Ryan removed as president pending investigation.

RW Strategic fee canceled.

Claire’s majority protected under revised financing.

Ryan’s business argument died.

The company did not need him to accept his good idea.

Then police entered.

They did not arrest him for attempted murder that night.

Not yet.

They did seize his devices and formally name him a suspect in intentional poisoning and financial conspiracy.

As he left, Ryan stopped beside Claire.

“You think Vanessa was an accident?”

Claire stared.

He smiled faintly.

“She was always the weak link.”

Claire’s blood went cold.

“What does that mean?”

Ryan’s attorney pulled him away before he answered.

Then Vanessa’s phone buzzed.

A scheduled email.

From Ryan.

Sent automatically if his company access was revoked.

Subject:

IF THEY REMOVE ME.

Vanessa opened it.
