Chapter 2 - THE HOSPITAL TEST

Vanessa and the baby survived the first night.

That was the only uncomplicated good news.

At two in the morning, a physician asked Claire to step into a private consultation room.

“Mrs. Whitmore, we found a compound in Ms. Hart’s blood that should not have been present at that concentration.”

Claire’s hands went cold.

“What compound?”

The doctor named a prescription medication Claire recognized.

She had taken it briefly after a cardiac episode the previous year.

“I used to have that prescription.”

“Do you still?”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

Claire hated the question.

“Yes.”

Then the doctor explained that Vanessa had likely ingested it orally.

The exact source required further testing.

Claire thought of the soup.

Ryan sat across the hall with Vanessa’s mother.

He looked devastated.

Convincingly devastated.

When police arrived, he cooperated immediately.

That bothered Claire too.

Ryan was best when prepared.

He told detectives Claire had recently complained about digestion problems and had asked the chef for a modified meal.

Claire stared.

“I did not.”

Ryan looked wounded.

“You told Rosa last week that rich food was making you sick.”

“That is not the same thing.”

“It could explain why the kitchen adjusted your bowl.”

A detective asked:

“Who knew Mrs. Whitmore had taken this medication?”

Ryan answered:

“Half the family.”

Claire nearly laughed.

Then his attorney arrived before sunrise.

Too fast.

Too ready.

By morning, Ryan had a complete theory.

Claire’s old medication may have been stored improperly.

A household container may have been confused with a kitchen supplement.

The restaurant may have made an accidental cross-contamination error.

Messy.

Plausible.

No accusation against Claire.

Not yet.

Then a detective asked Ryan one question.

“When you entered the dining room, why did you immediately know the bowl mattered?”

Ryan paused.

“I didn’t.”

Claire looked at him.

Everyone had heard him scream.

You weren’t supposed to touch it.

He recovered.

“I knew it was Claire’s bowl. Vanessa had taken it from her.”

The answer was possible.

Then Vanessa woke fully.

Ryan went to her bedside first.

Claire waited outside.

Ten minutes later, Vanessa asked to see Claire alone.

Her face was pale.

Her hands trembled.

“I hate you,” Vanessa whispered.

Claire blinked.

“Good morning to you too.”

“But he knew.”

Claire sat.

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“He didn’t ask me what I ate. He looked at the bowl and knew.”

Claire said nothing.

Vanessa swallowed.

“Was it meant for you?”

May you like

Before Claire could answer, Ryan appeared in the doorway.

And Vanessa immediately stopped talking.
