Chapter 14 - THE PERSON WHO ORDERED DINNER

Claire had not ordered the lobster soup.

Neither had Ryan.

The original dinner menu had been different.

The lobster course was added forty-eight hours before the event.

Request came from the Whitmore family office.

Authorized by Claire’s credentials.

Claire stared.

“I didn’t approve it.”

Another stolen login.

Then Rosa checked Claire’s calendar.

Two days before dinner, Susan had asked Claire’s assistant to forward updated guest preferences.

No menu change.

Leonard had requested seafood.

No specific soup.

Then the restaurant traced the authorization email.

It came from Claire’s family-office account.

Device:

Home study laptop.

Security camera showed only three people entering the study that afternoon.

Claire.

Rosa.

And Vanessa.

Everyone stared at Vanessa.

She went white.

“I used the computer.”

Claire’s heart stopped.

“Why?”

“To print a flight form.”

“Did you order the soup?”

“No.”

“Did Ryan ask you to use my account?”

Vanessa hesitated.

Then cried.

“Yes.”

There.

Ryan had told her his own company email was being audited during the acquisition and asked her to send a menu update from Claire’s system because “the family office handles dinners anyway.”

Vanessa agreed.

She did not read the attachment.

She had unknowingly ordered the course that later made her sick.

Ryan had placed her inside the chain.

If questioned, the menu originated from Claire’s account but was physically sent by Vanessa.

A perfect mess.

Then Vanessa remembered the attachment name.

CW_DIETARY_FINAL.

Not menu.

Dietary.

Ryan had sent her a document to upload.

Investigators recovered the file from her deleted downloads.

It instructed the restaurant to add a lobster soup course and prepare Claire’s serving separately.

Author metadata:

Not Ryan.

Martin Hale.

The company lawyer.

Martin looked finished.

He claimed Ryan sent him instructions and he formatted the document.

Possible.

Then metadata showed the file was created six months earlier.

Not two days before dinner.

The exact same dietary template had existed long before Vanessa’s pregnancy.

Long before the current Harbor Crown vote.

Claire stared.

Ryan may have selected the timing.

But someone had prepared a medical-event template months earlier.

Then Naomi found the original document folder.

Title:

CONTINUITY EVENT MATERIALS.

Created by:

Leonard Whitmore’s governance office.

Claire looked toward her uncle.

May you like

Leonard’s face collapsed.

The plan was older than Ryan’s affair.
