Chapter 5 - THE MAN WHO ASKED ABOUT MEDICINE

Rosa remembered the first question because it seemed caring.
“Do we still have Claire’s heart medication?”
She told Ryan she thought it had been discarded.
A week later, he asked again.
Then two days before the dinner:
“Check the cabinet. I may need the old prescription number.”
“For what?”
“He said insurance paperwork.”
Ryan denied all three conversations.
Rosa had no recording.
Then Naomi found a refill request from Claire’s medical portal.
Old medication.
New bottle.
Requested three weeks earlier.
Claire stared.
“I didn’t do this.”
Portal authentication showed correct password and security token.
Delivery destination:
Whitmore Coastal headquarters executive reception.
Ryan’s office floor.
The pharmacy had already delivered it.
Signature:
M. Evans.
Ryan’s assistant.
Megan Evans confirmed she accepted a sealed pharmacy package addressed to Claire and placed it on Ryan’s desk because he said he would bring it home.
Ryan’s attorney responded:
“Mr. Whitmore frequently transports his wife’s prescriptions.”
True.
Then Ryan produced text history showing Claire had once asked him to pick up medication.
Also true.
Claire felt the shape of his defense.
Nothing he did looked strange in isolation.
Marriage created access.
Access created excuses.
Then Vanessa’s lab results came back.
The compound in her blood matched the active ingredient in Claire’s prescription.
But investigators could not prove it came from that specific bottle.
Ryan’s attorney smiled publicly for the first time.
No chain.
No direct placement.
No confession.
Then Harbor Crown’s board vote approached.
Ryan requested Claire recuse herself from voting because she was “emotionally compromised by an active criminal allegation involving her spouse.”
Claire laughed when Naomi read it.
“He’s asking me to step aside voluntarily.”
“Yes.”
“Will the board accept?”
“Some might.”
Harbor Crown itself was still attractive.
That was Ryan’s shield.
Then Claire read the latest appraisal.
The properties were good.
The acquisition probably did make sense.
If she opposed it only because Ryan wanted it, she would prove his argument.
So Claire asked a different question.
“What happens if we buy Harbor Crown without Ryan’s financing structure?”
Naomi smiled.
Now they were fighting the deal, not the man.
Then a financial analyst found something hidden in the appendix.
RW Strategic would receive a two-percent advisory interest if Harbor Crown closed under emergency spouse voting.
Not if Claire approved it normally.
Only if Ryan voted her shares.
Claire stared.
May you like
The structure rewarded her absence specifically.
And for the first time, motive stopped looking theoretical.
