Chapter 6 - THE PREGNANT WITNESS

Vanessa left the hospital after three days.
She refused to go home with Ryan.
That created more headlines than the poisoning.
She moved into her sister’s apartment under medical supervision.
Claire did not call her.
Vanessa called Claire.
“I want to know what you found.”
Claire answered:
“Why?”
“Because he won’t tell me anything.”
“That sounds familiar.”
Vanessa went quiet.
Then:
“He said you were controlling.”
Claire laughed.
“I can be.”
“He said you used money to punish him.”
“Sometimes I used control to stop him making decisions I thought were reckless.”
“So he wasn’t lying.”
“No.”
Vanessa had not expected honesty.
Claire continued.
“He just never told you what he was doing at the same time.”
Vanessa asked about Harbor Crown.
Claire explained the emergency-vote advisory interest.
Silence.
Then Vanessa said:
“He created a trust for the baby.”
Claire’s expression changed.
“What trust?”
“Ryan said it was protection.”
Vanessa sent documents.
The unborn child’s trust would receive $3 million if Harbor Crown closed.
At first Claire thought that weakened her case.
Ryan could argue he was securing his child’s future.
Then Naomi noticed the condition.
Funding occurred only if Ryan remained executive leader after closing.
If the board removed him, nothing.
The baby’s future had been tied to Ryan’s control.
Vanessa stared at the clause on video call.
“He told me the money was already there.”
“It isn’t.”
“He said my child would never depend on anyone.”
Claire watched her face collapse.
Ryan had promised Vanessa freedom while writing dependence into the contract.
Then Vanessa said:
“There’s something else.”
The night before the dinner, Ryan had asked her whether pregnancy made her “extra hungry.”
Vanessa laughed at the time.
He asked if she usually stole food from other people’s plates.
Claire went still.
“Why would he ask that?”
Vanessa started crying.
“Maybe he knew I might take your bowl.”
That changed the theory.
What if Ryan had not simply failed to predict Vanessa’s behavior?
What if he had been testing the risk?
Then Vanessa said something even worse.
“He told me not to come to dinner.”
Claire frowned.
“Then why were you there?”
“Your cousin invited me.”
Ryan had tried to keep Vanessa away.
May you like
Maybe because the bowl was never meant for her.
Or maybe because he needed that fact later.
