Chapter 4 - THE CHEF'S INSTRUCTION

The restaurant manager did not want scandal.
He wanted lawyers.
The Whitmore dinner had been private, expensive, and full of people whose names caused headlines.
Naomi obtained the service notes through a preservation request.
There it was.
VIP dietary instruction.
Guest:
Claire Whitmore.
Private adjustment requested by Ryan Whitmore.
Serving note:
Mrs. Whitmore’s bowl is not to be switched under any circumstances.
Claire read it twice.
“What adjustment?”
The manager claimed he did not know.
Ryan had spoken directly with executive chef Mason Cole.
Mason said Ryan asked for a “lighter preparation” because Claire had experienced recent health problems.
Ryan denied requesting any medication or unusual additive.
Then kitchen footage surfaced.
Ryan entered the service corridor twenty-six minutes before the soup course.
He remained there four minutes.
Camera angle did not show the prep counter.
When he returned, he washed his hands.
Suspicious.
Not decisive.
Ryan’s attorney attacked immediately.
“Mr. Whitmore owns restaurants. He enters kitchens constantly.”
True.
Then he produced a message Claire had sent Ryan three weeks earlier after discovering suspicious hotel charges.
If you’re lying to me, I will take everything you think belongs to you.
Claire stared at her own words.
Ryan’s attorney said:
“Mrs. Whitmore has both motive and access to the medication found in Ms. Hart.”
Naomi almost laughed.
“Your client’s mistress ate Mrs. Whitmore’s bowl.”
“Exactly. If someone intended to harm Vanessa, switching bowls would be an elegant way to frame Ryan.”
That was the first time Claire realized how bad the case could look from another angle.
Vanessa had taken Claire’s soup publicly.
Claire had hated her.
Claire had old access to the medication.
The wrong person became sick.
Ryan began building a competing theory.
Maybe Claire expected Vanessa to take the bowl.
Maybe Claire staged the entire thing.
Ridiculous.
But not impossible enough to dismiss instantly.
Then Rosa Hale, Claire’s longtime house manager, called Naomi.
“I need to show you something.”
They met at the Whitmore home.
Rosa opened the medicine cabinet.
One empty slot.
Claire frowned.
“What was there?”
Rosa held up a pharmacy inventory list.
A bottle from Claire’s old prescription.
Claire remembered discarding it months ago.
Rosa shook her head.
“I saw it here last week.”
Claire looked at her.
“Who had access?”
Rosa’s answer was simple.
“Everyone in this house.”

Then she added:
“But Ryan asked me about that bottle three times.”
