The earlier behavior was harder.
Canceled nursing visits were not crimes by themselves.
Holding mail could be relevant but depended on the item and access.
Managing medication had begun with Claire’s consent.
The legal case focused on what could actually be proved.
Ethan accepted a negotiated plea involving:
probation,
domestic-violence intervention,
no-contact conditions,
and compliance with treatment recommendations.
No absurd decades-long prison sentence.
The court did not need to make him a monster.
The domestic-violence intervention program irritated Ethan.
He hated the language.
“Power.”
“Control.”
“Entitlement.”
He said:
“I was trying to keep my wife alive.”
The facilitator asked:
“Was she dying in the kitchen?”
“No.”
“Was she medically incapable of deciding to leave?”
“No.”
“Then what exactly were you protecting her from?”
Ethan answered:
“Making a mistake.”
The room went quiet.
