Chapter 14 - SARAH

Months later, Claire asked Sarah to coffee.
“Why did you come back for the bag?”
Sarah laughed.
“Because I forgot my bag.”
Claire stared.
“That’s it?”
“That’s it.”
No fate.
No secret suspicion.
No heroic plan.
A forgotten medical bag.
Claire said:
“You saved me.”
Sarah shook her head.
“I helped you leave.”
Claire’s eyes filled.
“That’s saving.”
“No.”
Sarah leaned forward.
“You said you wanted out. I believed you.”
That distinction mattered to Claire.
For months, Ethan had framed every decision as something he had to make for her.
Sarah had done the opposite.
Asked.
Listened.
Acted on Claire’s answer.
Sarah and Claire’s coffee meeting ended with one more correction.
Claire said:
“You were brave.”
Sarah answered:
“I was trained.”
“Training doesn’t make it easy.”
“No.”
Then:
“But please don’t build a story where I was the only person who could have saved you.”
Claire frowned.
Sarah continued:
“You asked for help out loud. That mattered.”
Claire thought about it.
She had spent months feeling ashamed that rescue depended on Sarah walking back through the door.
Maybe the doorway mattered.
But so did the sentence.
