Chapter 3 - THE SURGERY

Claire’s cancer had been caught early.

A small malignant tumor near the upper chest had required surgery and lymph-node evaluation.

The prognosis was cautiously favorable.

No miracle.

No certainty.

Pathology was still pending on final margins.

She was weak because:

surgery hurt,

sleep was poor,

and fear is exhausting.

Ethan had been attentive at the hospital.

Almost perfect.

He took notes.

Asked questions.

Picked up prescriptions.

Told nurses:

“I’ve got her.”

Claire believed him.

Or wanted to.

The first two days home, he was gentle.

Then he began controlling small things.

“You already took pain medicine.”

“You don’t need another shower.”

“Don’t answer work emails.”

“Sarah can come tomorrow.”

At first Claire heard care.

Then:

May you like

“I said no.”

Different.
