Chapter 2 - WHAT SARAH DID

Sarah did not tackle Ethan.

Did not threaten him.

Did not become an action hero.

She did what her training required.

She stayed near the exit.

Kept Claire in view.

Spoke clearly.

“Ethan, release her.”

He did not.

“She had surgery. She’s emotional.”

Sarah said:

“I asked Claire.”

Claire was sobbing now.

“Please.”

Ethan loosened his grip.

Not because he suddenly respected Claire.

Because Sarah’s phone was connected.

The dispatcher could hear.

Sarah moved between them the moment Claire stepped free.

“Come with me.”

Claire held Sarah’s forearm.

Her knees nearly buckled.

Sarah guided her toward the front hall.

Ethan followed.

“She cannot leave without her medication.”

Sarah turned.

“I’ll arrange what she needs.”

“You don’t understand her case.”

“I understand she asked to leave.”

Police and paramedics arrived minutes later.

Claire’s dressing was assessed.

No catastrophic surgical injury.

The surgical team examined the dressing and found local irritation and minor seepage.

No major wound disruption.

No new surgery.

Claire was relieved.

Then ashamed of the relief.

As if a minor medical consequence made Ethan’s behavior less serious.

The surgeon corrected that without drama.

“Your wound status and what happened at home are separate questions.”

Claire nodded.

Medicine could answer:

Is the incision stable?

It could not answer:

Was it acceptable for someone to hurt you there?

The second answer did not depend on the first being catastrophic.

No reopened wound requiring emergency surgery.

But enough irritation and seepage to need evaluation.

More importantly, Claire said in front of multiple responders:

May you like

“I am afraid to stay here.”

No one needed a diagnosis for that sentence.
