Chapter 7 - THE MAIL

After Claire left the house, she stayed overnight at the hospital for observation and discharge planning.
Sarah visited briefly.
Not as family.
As the nurse who had witnessed the incident.
Claire asked:
“Did you know something was wrong before today?”
Sarah answered carefully.
“I had concerns.”
“Why didn’t you say something?”
“I asked questions.”
“That’s not what I mean.”
Sarah nodded.
“I can’t decide for you that your marriage is abusive based on one tense visit.”
Claire looked down.
Fair.
Then Sarah said:
“But I did notice cancellations, medication control, and that Ethan answered for you.”
Claire remembered the mail.
“Wait.”
Her sister brought Claire’s handbag from the house after police supervised access.
Inside was a folded bank envelope Claire had never seen.
Past-due notice.
Project-related credit line.
Ethan’s name.
Then another envelope.
Claire's work life had also been affected.
She was a senior operations manager at a logistics company.
Before surgery, she arranged six weeks of medical leave.
Ethan told coworkers:
“She won’t be checking email.”
That was fine.
Then he started answering her personal phone when colleagues called.
Not fine.
One colleague later said:
“He told me you were too overwhelmed to make decisions.”
Claire stared.
“I never said that.”
“I know.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I thought you were recovering.”
Again, reasonable people had accepted Ethan’s version because it sounded plausible.
That realization was uncomfortable.
Abuse did not require everyone around Claire to be foolish.
It only required one person to speak for her often enough.
Home-equity lender.
Application incomplete pending co-borrower signature.
Ethan had not forged Claire.
That mattered.
He had applied.
Started the process.

Waited for her signature.
But he had also kept the mail from reaching her.
