Chapter 9 - CLAIRE'S ACCOUNTABILITY

Claire hated when her therapist asked:
“Why did you stay after the missing $74,000?”
“I had cancer.”
“That explains after diagnosis. What about the month before?”
Claire looked away.
Because she loved him.
Because the investment might recover.
Because divorce sounded enormous.
Because Ethan cried.
Because he said:
“I was trying to build something for us.”
And because Claire had hidden financial problems too.
Not $74,000.
But she had carried $11,000 in old business-school loans longer than Ethan realized and once minimized the balance.
Different scale.
Same instinct:
avoid conflict.
