Chapter 12 - THE BABY

Stress sent Claire to the hospital at thirty-three weeks.

Not labor.

Contractions from dehydration and exhaustion.

She was monitored overnight.

Baby stable.

Adrian came.

Claire refused to see him.

He argued he had rights as father.

The nurse said:

“She decides who enters her room.”

Simple.

Then Vanessa arrived.

Claire almost laughed.

“You too?”

Vanessa stayed outside.

Left a note.

I’m not asking to come in.

Better.

Claire’s mother, Helen Carter, sat beside her.

Helen had spent months blaming Vanessa.

Then learned about Adrian’s manipulation.

She said:

“I failed both of you.”

Claire looked at her.

“How?”

“I spent years calling you responsible and her reckless.”

Both daughters listened to those labels.

Claire became the achiever.

Vanessa became the problem.

Adrian later weaponized exactly that split.

Helen continued:

“That doesn’t make Vanessa sleeping with your husband my fault.”

Good.

“But I helped build the rivalry he used.”

Claire stared at the ceiling.
