Claire had initialed a draft.
Not signed the final agreement.
Her initials appeared on each page only to confirm receipt during mediation.
The draft’s page fourteen said:
Business-property characterization remains disputed and subject to valuation.
The filed version said:
Wife acknowledges all interests in Vale Dynamics are Husband’s separate property and waives any present or future marital claim.
Claire stared.
“I never agreed to that.”
Adrian’s lawyer immediately stood.
“We need a recess.”
Judge Rowan’s face hardened.
“Who filed this version?”
The lawyer answered:
“My office received it from Mr. Vale’s financial counsel.”
Adrian looked at him.
First panic.
Rachel produced her saved PDF.
File hash.
Email timestamp.
Version history.
Then the filed copy.
Same pages one through thirteen.
Different fourteen.
Same initial image placed at bottom.
Claire’s actual initials had been copied digitally from another page.
Judge Rowan ordered:
no settlement execution,
preservation of all electronic records,
and immediate production of the document chain.
Then he addressed Adrian.
“You struck a pregnant litigant in my courtroom.”
Adrian began:
“She struck—”
“After you struck her.”
Silence.
The bailiff separated the parties.
Vanessa tried to leave.
Rachel said:
“Your Honor, Ms. Carter may have relevant knowledge of the document preparation.”
Vanessa stopped.
Judge Rowan ordered her not to destroy communications relating to:
Adrian,
Vale Dynamics,
the divorce,
or the settlement.
Vanessa’s face went pale.
Claire looked at her.
The photos had humiliated them.
